i got the book from my mother and finished it in a day. It didn't make much of an impact on me, it was like reading a magazine and not a Scanlon book. It read too fast, don't know if it was the big print and all the 'space ' on the pages, but I just had to keep going because I just wanted to hear Jess to tell her friend more or less to f***off!! That never happened ofcourse. But what girl would put herself through all that misery with a bloke, when she knew he wasn't interested in her??
Can you see yourself doing that Abby?

You said something about the tennis club, what did you not find believable about it

Nope I certainly wouldn't have. I thought it was funny Carol should pick a guy like that considering her background and family, its was like she was wanting to be hurt

my thoughts on the book, got to say I quite enjoyed it, it was an easy read the chacacters were annoying but got to say I'm a bit like Jessica and find it hard to say no to people inside my head I'm saying no and out my mouth comes yes from somewhere, I am learning though.I can't compare to any others of Patricias but I have got FRANCESCA'S pARTY to read but I keep putting it off.

Didn't think I was going to either just in the door. As you know I didn't finish the book but I left my comments on the July BookClub thread today before this one was set up. I have the book in question in my hand at the moment and can honestly say there is no comparison to Foreign Affairs, City Woman etc. Would this but you off buying another Scanlan book? Does a guy like Gary hang out at tennis clubs!? The storyline of a Double Wedding was very unrealistic to me. I thought the male characters had more of an impact in the storyline than the female. . . Gary was an ar*sehole but I found his character believable accept the part about him at the tennis club!

Her other books have better stories. I loved 'promises, promises' and the secquel 'mirror, mirror' and then thr trio of 'city girls', 'city women' & 'city lives'. I would reconmend those, and i think you would like them
Now back to the book in question anybody else got something to say

I don't know what it is with James he gets in these moods and he's so hyper we can't calm him down I've tried all sorts,I nipped to the shops this morning and Jason said he had a fit while I was away all because I didnt take him it was pouring with rain outside and I thought for quickness to nip by myself.. arrr honestly take no notice of me tonight my head is done in.

Charlie I reckon your quite right about Jessica and saying no in her head but not being able to say to to Carol, And I reckon saying no to Carol would be harder than saying no to anybody else because of the way she carries on

Jess didn't get a chance to say 'no'. everytime she tried Carole turned things round to her advantage, or fell into line with what jess wanted to a certain extent. She very bossy near the end with saying what the men should wear. But i must say I felt so sorry for her at the end, when her father turned up

I got to chapter 26 Abby. I agree with you I would never in a million years have thought a women like Carol with her background and snooty personality would have ever dated a guy like Gary let alone want to marry him - I just cant see that happening in every day life maybe I'm wrong. . . Lets be honest here Gary's a bit of rough but do you wanna marry him?!!!!!!!!!!!
Claire, Can you see a Jack the lad like Gary sitting at the tennis club!!!!! For some reason I don't think so. What did you think of Mike Jessica's finance?

Post by Abby on Jul 28, 2005 19:43:45 GMT
I found I'd start to feel sorry for Carol and then I'd think about how she was treating Jessica and I become ashamed of Carol, I still felt sorry for her but not as much.

It's a while since I read it and was just having a quick look a the ending again. I felt so sorry for Carol. I think the end made it clearer as to why Jess couldn't say no. I thought it great though that the two mother got on so well in the end, living accross from each other for years and then ending up getting along so well.
Susan have you read the chapter on the wedding
