I just read Sarah's newsletter and realised that Vanessa (one of the winners of the S&S comp) is the Vanessa that I met at Sarah's book launch! Lovely lady - well done Vanessa if you ever get to see this!

Hi, I got a package from Poolbeg today. Yes. The short story collection called Do The Write Thing is on pre-release. Official release date per the Poolbeg website is 28th August. My story in a real book. It's lovely. I was sticking my nose into the pages to smell it and everything! The collection is diverse with all sorts of subjects and characters and settings. The royalties are in aid of the National Breast Cancer Research Institute so everyone should buy one, or more. Give them as presents. And it's always interesting to see what type of story and writing win these things. Vanessa's story is great! No word yet on an official launch. I think Seioge and O'Shea are back on the screens in October. The cover is lovely, a girl with long bare legs reading in the grass. I'm guessing the picture wasn't taken this summer in Ireland!

Did anyone pick up a copy of the Dublin Metro today by any chance? There's supposed to be an article in it on the book. I haven't seen it.

Can you keep your eyes open for it Megan? Maybe they ran out of space yesterday and have it on hold. It's not released until the weekend so won't be in shops until then.

I got this book today and have read the winning story and Kate's so far. I loved your story Kate. The way you tied up the threads relating to the cake ingredients at the end was lovely. (in fact I prefered it to the winning one.) Having heard your Francis McManis story and read this one, I am a fan and looking forward to your novel.

Couldn't agree more, Megan! Katie's story was just beautifully written. Well done to you. I have to say it's one of the best collection of short stories I've read to date. I loved every single one!

Thanks ladies!
The book is apparently currently at number 20 in the Irish top 20 which is fantastic considering how little publicity it's had.

Read a few more stories from this book. I read the runner-up, Poles Apart, the last story in the book about the girl with Hodgkin's Lymphoma, and the story An End Has a Beginning. I liked them all, but I think An End Has a Beginning would have benefited from a stronger closing line. Just my opinion! Also read Vanessa's story and it is great, but I do have one issue with the title of her story - it's called An Elaborate Deception, so from the first line, I was on the alert for who was deceiving who, and as a result, I was kind of able to predict what was going to happen - not totally, but the title made me suspicious, and I started thinking something that I know I would not have thought at all if the title had been different. I would have been totally shocked at the ending had it not been for the title. But maybe the author wanted us to think that way. Again, it's just my opinion. Really great collection of stories overall and so easy to get into each one.

This week it's number 26 in the charts. But there was a short piece on S&S on Wednesday (blink and you will have missed it - is that the launch?) and it's now on sale in Tesco's at 5.95 - so you can buy it with your broccoli and Persil so it may pop up again.
