Hi guys, We don't seem to have a thread specifically for the Listowel Writers' Week competitions, so I thought it would be no harm to start one. I know that Megan referenced them in her welcome mail to Bonnie back in January, but just in case you missed them, you can check out the details of the comps on www.writersweek.ie/2008/competitions.htmThe closing date for comps is Feb 29th, 2008.

Hello Shirley,
I'm glad you put that up I booked the novel writing workshop which I'm looking forward to. Have been looking at the competitions and may enter something - short story or poem.
It's early days but is anyone else going to Listowel?
Regards
Bonnie

Not this year Bonnie. I have been three times and it's wonderful.

I definitely won't be going Bonnie as I'll be immersed in the world of babies by then, but I am thinking about writing a short story for one of the comps. We'll see. There aren't many days left to get it done, but I'm going to do my best.
Hope you enjoy the workshop!

Hi Megan and Shirley,
Thanks for the replies - I was wondering (if there isn't one already) could we start a thread for competitions and magazines. I know some people are very experienced on this site and have gone on to bigger things like novels etc. But I'm only starting to send my work out and it would be really helpful to have some tips, as well as "where to send" work. I've been checking out a few sites myself for competitions and I can put up a little of that. What d you think.
Happy Days
Bonnie

Hi there,
The novel writing workshop in Listowel is being given by Carlo Gebler - has anybody ever gone to a workshop by him, read any of his books. I've read some short stories by him and like the way he phrases things. He's Edna O'Brien's son. She, as it happens, is one of my all time favourite writers.
Megan would love to hear more about Listowel - Did you do any of the workshops? Regards Bonnie

I went to an arvon foundation course with Carlo a few years ago. He's very gruff, sergeant major-y and also rather dictatorial but I found his insights very useful. And underneath I think he's soft so don't let the exterior put you off. (and don't quote me!)

Thanks, Katied - that's good to know - I won't quote you.
All the best
