As I said I am only a bit of the way through it, but it seems to me that Lucy doesn't realise how attractive she is because of her sister and because of the way she's been hurt by Jason. She's a very self-depreciating character. I have read a good few of Tina's books now, and all the main characters seem to have that trait. I always find myself liking the character and gunning for them to succeed when they're like that.

What were peoples first impressions of Tracy, Lucy's sister? I thought she was really stuck up but then i took to her.
Thought Lucy was really horrible when she wouldnt let fainne have the present off tracy even though she really wanted it!

She was always being compared to her sister, the sister always got the limelight. Lucy felt she was a disappointment to everyone because she ended up being a single mother. She just couldn't see the good side to it. She never became the actress she always wanted to be, she always settled for second best

As I'm not going to be able to stick around for very long, I'll just post my thoughts in a sort of review type thing. And will post some more tomorrow when I have more time.
-----------------
From the moment I started reading until I turned the very last page, I was hooked.
The story draws you in with believable and lovable characters with a plot that is heart-wrenching with a touch of humour thrown in for good measure. Told in first person and through the eyes of Lucy, you can't help but go on a rollercoaster of emotion along with her as she tries to track down Jason while at the same time fighting the ever growing feelings she has for her boss Doug, who incidentally I think I may have fallen in love with too.
We learn the backstory between Lucy and Jason through Lucy's old diary and the entries she made at the time. This in my opinion was a brilliant way of giving us the history between the two of them, making us feel like we were going through it with Lucy rather than just hearing about it all these years later.
There are plenty of laugh out loud moments, in particular the bit where Lucy and Maddie go round to Jason's old flat and speak to his old flatmate Johnno who also has a grudge against Jason and not forgetting the radio interview Lucy participates in where Clive, Doug and Gray all phone in claiming to be the father of Fainne...hilarious. However towards the end it gets a little bit more emotional. We find out the reasons behind Jason's abandonment of Lucy and I admit to crying along with Lucy when she finally found the answers she'd been searching for.
The death of Mr Devlin's dog Paddy was also very emotional and I found myself having to wipe away a few tears....well okay more than a few tears...I was sobbing like a baby.
Wish Upon A Star is the first book I've read by Tina Reilly, but it certainly will not be the last.

Sounds like you're talking from experience Oonagh. Glad you got rid of Brad to be with us.
I never took to Tracy. I don't Lucy should have reacted the way she did but I could understand it. Why did Tracey have to go out and but the biggest and best. She could have given her something else

sorry back to the book.
Shirley DON"T READ THIS
the ending was so sad with Jason, wasn't it but it fitted so well with the story. At least Fainne got to meet her grandfather and Lucy found out about Jasons true feelings. I think every relationship need proper 'closure' for a person to continue, what do youse think

Loved this book I liked the main character one of my laugh out loud moments was when Lucy was on the telephone in the vets and she was making an excuse up to the person from the collage to trace Jason and she says shes dying and Doug over hears and says Oh I'm sorry to hear that Brill

yes i weren't expecting the ending to be like that or to find out about jason but it fitted the storyline so well. I was so pleased that jason's dad became involved in there life especially for little Fainne. This was a great way to end the past and a great way to start the future for that family.

I have to agree with you. If Jason had have come back into their lives I think it would have been too disruptive for both Lucy and Fainne. The way the relationship ended was sudden and there was no closure for the young Lucy and Jason coming back into her life all these years later would have stirred up all those feelings she had for him and I think she'd always be stuck in the past. This way she can move on having done the best thing as far as her daughter is concerned by at least tracking down Jason's father.
I'm really going now. Talk to you later!

i really enjoyed the bits where fainne just spoke her mind and produced some great one liners like where Philip says to fainne 'your daddy wasn't good at talking' and she replies 'maybe he needed speech therapy' great dry humour which had me chuckling away

And then at the auction(sp) the man buying the place. And even Mr. Devlin putting in a bid, and the woman she worked with, can't remember her name. The build up there was great, a real laugh. Oh I just remembered when the man who owned the building came and asked for tes and Lucy was taking the use of electricy off that months rent. She was a great character when she got going
