okay, the couple is Tory and Ray and their going out with each other and living together a year or two. Hes very unreliable alltogether, as in hes waiting for 'his big break'! He plays the guitar and jumps from band to band as he reckons hes just the best guitarist there is and everyone else is losing out not having him in their band! You know the sort.......
Tory then finds out she is pregnant but of course Ray being a man, cant get his head around this fact at all, and cant understand how it happened. Hes too young to settle down with kids he feels, especially now that any day now hes going to be spotted by a PA from Sony or somewhere and hes finally going to be rich and famous! He so bad though, at times I wanted to jump into the book and pull him out by the hair! Maybe its my own hormones plus the fact that im pregnant myself, but he wouldnt even go to the hospital with her for her antenatal visits for gods sake!! In fact, the day Tory went into labour, he very kindly phoned for a cab, sat her in the back, and said 'now good luck Tory, phone me and let me know how things go yeah!!!'
aggghhhhhhhhh!! i really wanted to kill him girls!
So, to cut a very long story short, she eventually asked him to leave as she was basically supporting him and oh yeah I forgot to mention, he was smoking hash alot too and she very rightly didnt want anybody doing drugs around her baby, even if it was her daddy. He gave her no support at all, either financially or emotionally, left EVERYTHING up to Tory to sort out, never in Lucy's first year of her life did he get up once during the night for a feed or a change of nappy or even just a cuddle! Dont think he cuddled her at all, and she was the most loveliest baby ever. I loved Tracys description of her throughout the book.

Well he left and didn't hear from him 4 ages then he turned up out of the blue saying he wants to see her. Tory said he could once he got off the drugs. The next day he just took her from the childminders. As 4 why he wants 2 c her all of a sudden well I haven't got that far 2 find that out yet. Tianna is getting tired so have to give her a bottle and put her back to bed. Will b back soon.

You know we have an add like that in Holland. The womwn goed into labour, he calls forthe cab, puffs with her down the drive, hands the bag to the cabby, settles the wife in the back and runs back into the house to watch the film on satilite television!

How did he know where the childminder was, or was it from her own home. And what kind of childminder would give a child to a strange man.

Claire, Ray came back to Tory and Lucy after about a year and said he was sorry and would love to be in Lucy's life and he knows hes made a mess of things etc etc.....
So, shes starts thinking, better late than never, maybe she should give him the chance to get to know Lucy, and sure isnt it only fair that Lucy gets to know her dad?. Then she looks at him straight into the eyes and immediately cops that his eyes are pinned, she knows hes been using again even though he has just lied in her very own kitchen, in front of her, yet again, and told her that hes clean. So, she ends up losing the head with him a little (rightly so in my opinion, hed of got the frying pan over the head by this stage!) and tells him to please go and not to come back, that basically hes still a liar and that unless he REALLY cleans up his act this time and proves it to Tory, Ray will NEVER EVER see his daughter Lucy again.
So, off Ray goes muttering that hes going to get clean, he'll show Tory and everyone else..................
She doesnt hear from him again, now Lucy gets minded by Carol the childminder every day whild Tory's in work. Carol isnt just Lucy;s childminder, shes also Torys very best friend, when Torys comes to collect Lucy in the evenings, the two girls would often sit down for a cup of tea and a chat, Tory feels that she can talk to Carol about anything as she doesnt have any family around her. Carol simply idolizes Lucy, thinks the world of her and loves her like her own baby.
Then the unthinkable happens, Torys in work one day and gets the phone call. Carol seems to be distrought on the telephone and tells Tory to come home immediatly but doesnt say why. It turns out that Ray has taken Lucy from Carols house and has left a note saying that if any police get involved.........he doesnt actually say what he would do to Lucy but he asks Tory to remember what happened to another little girl in Ireland a few years back, who had got 'kidnapped/abducted' by her father and when the police finally closed in on him and his daughter, he shot both himself and his little girl,- dead. Tory remembers this story only to clearly and refuses to contact the police at all. She is so worried what will happen to Lucy.
The thing is though, I knew or thought i would have known that Ray wouldnt do anything to hurt lucy, and the funny thing was he didnt even want to have anything to do with her, he'd no contact for the first couple of years of her life, so why should he want to know her now..........

Ok girls I'm back could do with a sleep myself actually. I worked last night and didn't get home til afta midnight so by the time i wound down and actually went to bed it was 2am then Tianna decided she wanted to get up ay 5.30 and play, so I'm a bit tired. Yes it is christmas eve here. School holidays started the beginning of this week and end the end of January beginning of Feb. Ray actually forced his way into the childminders and she thought it would be best to do as he said so then Lucy wouldn't get so frightened. Kelly do you watch a show called Tru Calling?

I lost my daughter on a beach about 10 years ago and I tell you she was only gone for a couple of hours but I was like a mad woman for those two hours, would not sit down, was running up and down Brittas Bay looking for her. There would be no way I would be even able to sleep let alone go for meals and have sex!!!!
I dunno, yes i did enjoy Loving Lucy, but it did frustrate me at times, especially when they would be so close to getting her back and she refused to get the police involved, and I have to say if that happened to me personally the child minder would still be getting the third degree, good mate or not! at least if the police had of been involved, they would have questioned Carol and got more info out of her straight away. oh, claire, im afraid to say anymore cos i know you want to read it and I really dont want to spoil it for you. there really wil be no point in you reading it girl, if you hear the ending, you know?

Hi Nic and Claire-- I'm at home actually. I'm a teacher, so I'm off until Jan 3rd. Heaven! I have much reading to catch up on! Looking forward to reading this one and having something intelligent to say. Feel like I'm at school and have showed up for a lecture without having read the book. Much easier to just tell you!

I'm 'making coffee' at the moment.
I have to say you're doing a great job of discussing the book without giving away the ending!! And Lisa's right- if someonbe had told me the ending when I was half way through I'd have murdered them.
Claire did you know that Poolbeg will send books overland which makes it alot cheaper? Or maybe it was you who told us that!!
