The novel that launched Virginia Andrews' superselling career: the tale of four children locked in an attic by their once-loving mother! It was a game of happy families. The four children lived such perfect lives in such a happy, golden family. It was a game of hide and seek. Their father died suddenly. The children now lived alone, hidden in the airless attic. It was a case of tender, loving murder. Their mother promised that they would stay only long enough to inherit her family's fortune. But gradually she forgot how much she adored those children. Millions of readers have been enthralled by this gripping story of a family's betrayal and heartbreak, love and revenge - which then sows the seeds for the future.
I'm half way through this book; which still has the power to shock twenty seven years later. I've just put it down to give it a break but I keep thinking about it.

Susan, that book has haunted me from the day I read it. It's one of those books that never, ever leaves you.

Its crazy the way it has kept me thinking about it all day Its so so sad. I remember I used to love the film but now after re-reading the book there was so much left out of the film. I look forward to reading the sequels but I'll probably break it up with something lighter in between. Flowers In The Attic was my first "adult book" to read! My mother was trying to hide her copy from me but I kept getting my hands on it!!! I was shocked by it then but its only really effected me now the second time I read it. I suppose as an adult you see how serious it is.

I have read this book (and the others in the series) a few times now and could easily go back and read them all again. Loved it!

I have never read this (or any Virginia Andrews), but I have heard of the basic storyline. It does seem very sad - I think a trip to library this weekend might be order. I'm loving trying to keep up with all these books!

Well I finally got a chance to sit down and finish this book. It really is something else and to top it all off its based on a true story. How people can be so cruel to children is beyond words.
For anyone thats read the book - who angered you more the Grandmother or the children's Mother?
I think for me their Mother bothered me the most.
I've all the sequels on order but I'll definitely read something a lot more lighter before they arrive!

I agree with Claire. The mother angered me the most.
The prequel called "Garden of Shadows" focuses on the grandmother and how she became what she is. The whole series is fantastic

Did you get around to reading the others in the series, Susan? I would love to read them all again but I have SO MANY in my TBR pile so I should really concentrate on that.

Hi Nic, I actually didn't get around to reading them. I started reading other books and kind of forgot about them until this thread was brought up again. When I finish what I'm reading now I'll start 'Garden of Shadows' It will be interesting to read what made the Grandmother the sadistic b*tch she turned into.
