An unusual book in that the entire proceeds are going to The LauraLynn Children's Hospice Fundation and to date €50,000.00.
The Liberated Woman is a perceptive observation of family relationships centred on career woman Kate. The interior designer is separated from her husband Dermot and the opening chapter sees her reunited with her lover Jack and all seems set for a happy future. A number of distractions encroach on Kate's life, not least her brother and his family. Their arrival and gradual encroachment on Kate's life is intelligently and vividly described, particularly the insensitive Sue who manages to ride roughsod over all Kate's plans.
Brother Pat, Sue and their two all-American boys provide a lighter note to the tone of the novel as does Kate's stepmother Irene who has inherited all of Kate's father's money However, much more serious events are unfolding when Jack reveals a secret about which he has only just become aware himself. And the eponymous liberated woman fins herself gradually drawn into all the trials and tribulations experienced by her family. And here Fran O'Brien shows her talent as a writer with a totally convincing development of the plot which, though inevitably leading to the expected happy ending, has enough twists and turns to keep the interest of the reader totally alive. The catalyst for the breakdown in Kate and Jack's relationship is ultimately the cause of their reconciliation.
The questions of trust, responsibilty and family loyaly are dealt with in an entertaining fashion which, coupled with consistently authentic dialogue and an understanding of the dynamics of life in 21st century Ireland, make for an excellet read. This novel is a sequel to Fran's first novel - The Married Woman.
