His first novel Cowboys and Indians was shortlisted for the Whitbread Prize. He has gone on to produce ten Irish number one bestsellers and has won multiple awards, including the Miramax Ireland Screenwriting Award and the Sunday Tribune/Hennessy First Fiction and New Irish Writer of the Year Awards. His novels include Redemption Falls, Star of the Sea, Inishowen, The Salesman, and Desperadoes. Star of the Sea won the Prix Litteraire European Madeleine Zepter for European Novel of the Year and was promoted by the Richard and Judy Book Club. He has also written stage plays, film scripts, journalism, short stories and humour. His collection of comic essays The Secret World of the Irish Male and its successor publications have been a huge success in Ireland.
