I am teaching a creative writing class in the National Gallery in Dublin this Wednesday 11th July at 2pm. This is part of the Art for all ages scheme. Anyone can show up. No booking required. No experience required either. The idea is to use some of the fantastic Dutch interior painting there to spark a piece of creative writing, poetry or prose - all genres. So if you know anyone who might be interested, please send them along. The more the merrier and the more, the more likely it is I get to do it again. I hope this is the start of a long relationship!
I love the National Gallery and IMMA and the Hugh Lane Gallery.
I got the idea from the Tate Britain who run all sorts of interesting classes. Lots of writers have been commissioned to write poetry and short stories inspired by paintings and sculptures, particularly by the BBC. Perhaps we should talk to RTE about a series?

That sounds wonderful Katie! What a great idea! Unfortunately I won't be able to join you as I am away on holidays this week, but please let us know if you are doing it again. I love paintings and art galleries and would really enjoy your class.
Best of luck with it.

Well, it went swimmingly. 8 ladies and one man came and all wrote enthusiastically. The paintings are great triggers if you are ever feeling in need of inspiration. I was in there early on my own and it was fascinating to eavesdrop on other people's conversations as they wandered through. "Oh, look at that man. I wonder what he's thinking." "That woman reminds me of your aunt." "What did that poor child do to deserve that?" "Do you remember when...?" The participants were surprised themselves how much they got done and how associations and memories came flooding back, which was great to hear. And it certainly makes you look closer at the details in the paintings. Hope they have me back. I learned a lot and I need the money too!
