Hi Tina Well done with the IMPAC nomination. Good luck also with your latest book - I hear it's great. I'm going to cheat and ask you a question that I'm always being asked - What are the main differences between writing for adults and writing for children/teenagers? Thanks Judi

Hi everyone. it's Tina here. God, i hope I'm doing this right. i've already sent a private message to Susanmay and I don't know if I hsould have. (I've never done this before you see and I'm on a strange computer as mine has gone down with a very nasty virus and is really sick!) Anyway, I'll get on with answering all your questions and thanks to you all for posting and saying nice things. I was afraid of my life I'd be the only author that no one would turn up for!

Hi Claire, I'm grand, thanks. Bump is cooking away nicely but I'm feeling a bit frumpy and can't walk very far - all totally normal I know but still frustrating and I love walking everywhere. My partner is putting the kids to bed as I promised Catherine I'd stick around this eve in case of any probs. She's skiing, lucky thing! How are you? S

Hiya Judi and everyone. I've an hour booked in so I'll probably have it mastered by then. What is the protocal - do I answer all the questions in order or what? I saw loads of questions and now they seem to have disappeared from the screen!! So I'll answer your one. The main differences as far as I'm concerned is that the teen books are shorter (unless you're writing Harry Potter) and the plots are snappier. The adult stuff has at least two sub plots and older characters generally. Other than that, my style of writing for both genres is the same. I do like writing for teens though as it allows you to remember your youth thought it's getting rather harder now.

Hi Tina, I'd like to ask you two things please: 1) Which character from all of your books is your favourite, or do you have a favourite? 2) In your opinion, do you think there is still a market for new Irish chick-lit writers, or do you think the market has become flooded at this stage? I know that's a hard question to answer, but I'd be really interested in your opinion on this as I know you have many years of experience in writing. Congrats on the IMPAC nomination - I read 'Something Borrowed' and really enjoyed it. Thanks in advance, Shirley try this

Hi Tina, fair play to you going to an internet cafe! I can just see the intrepid trip now! When I did my interview I just answered questions in order. The great thing is that you can answer them later as well, it doesn't all have to be done at the same time. I've read over the questions and there seems to be lots of interest in the IMPAC or was it IMMAC awards. Also about the fact that you write both children's and teenagers. Lots of compliments too! you'll have to come back and read them at your leisure. Tracy

Hey Tina,
What could have happened is that there are so many questions that we have gone on to page two. If you look at the top left hand of the list of questions there is a small box saying page and then a number. All the earlier question are on page one and the current chat is on page two. If you click on that box you can choose between page one and page two. I hope that helps!

Sorry, Tina, my computer crashed there! Megan is right, you're on your second page now. If you scroll back you'll get the older questions. Maybe answer some of the newer ones and go back to the older later or tomorrow! SarahX

God - this is dreadful girls - I'm totally useless. Anyway, I managed to locate the first few questions so here goes - hiya Julia, great to hear from you. You asked about the teen books - to be honest, I haven't a clue what sort of teen books publishers are looking for at the moment. I do think though that there is definately a market emerging for sometihng in the 'supernatural' vein. if you study all the programmes on the telly and things that other people write about, i do think a book like that would do well. The only problem is that as a rule - and I know from bitter experience - the market for teen fiction is very limited and that unless it's a harry potter, it'll be hard to sell. It's a pity but children seem to graduate from the innocent little books onto the 'chick-lit' and horror stuff. I do wish you luck though and hope that you are the next Harry Potter!

I know! We could all talk ABOUT Tina instead! Embarrass her when she does get to read these. IMHO she's one of the nicest people you could meet ... one of the gifts for me of being a writer is having had the opportunity to get to know her. And she has a wicked sense of humour. And wonderful style. And she's a terrific actress. And she's got a lovely husband Colm who's really nice too. What else? Tracy

Next up _ Shirley!! hi Shirley - thrilled you asked me a question. I actaully don't have a favourite character in my books. I think to write at all you need to fall in love with your characters and if you do, that makes them warm and likeable somehow to readers. I suppose it's like asking me which of my children I love the best - I couldn't pick a favourite either. And yes, I do believe that there is a market for good books in general whether they are chick-lit or not. It is true that the market is flooded at the moment but no publisher I know would turn down the chance to publish a good book. Hope this answers your question.

I'd like to mention her wonderful play, Is This Love, which I saw with Martina Devlin last year. It was amazing, a huge achievement. Certainly as good as, if not better than many of the 'professional' plays I've seen recently, and much more enjoyable. Tina has a real talent for creating believable characters. Sarah
