Right, cringy lines! There were many of them in this book! I have the book right here in front of me and I have to refer to chapter 70. I thought Double Wedding was bad - this is the cringe factor at full throttle! "Gary grabbed her hand and placed it on his erect manhood. "Does that seem in working order to you, Ma'am?" "Oh Gary, it's beautiful!" There was no further need for words. Their bodies were once again speaking the language of love." UGH!!! I'm sorry like but that's just far too Mills and Boon for my liking. Sorry for bringing this bit up again but I couldn't help myself - how funny is that Shirley (trust you). Has anybody ever considered a ''Manhood'' as beautiful?

Sorry for bringing this bit up again but I couldn't help myself - how funny is that Shirley (trust you). Well now Kaz, you're the one who's "bringing it up" again - bold girl!!! ;D ;D Only joking!!!! Thing is right, every single book of women's fiction seems to have those kinds of scenes, but it's something we don't really discuss that much online as it's slightly embarrassing - but at the same time, most books never leave these scenes out of the book, so it's an aspect we have to look at. I think some authors tend to get those scenes very, very wrong and they sound very stilted. And to be fair, it's very understandable that those scenes can go wrong. Not to revert to Marian Keyes again as the paragon of all writing virtues, but I think she's very good at "romantic" scenes. Hers seem to add to the love between the couple she's writing about. I hate books where a bit of that stuff is thrown in just for the sake of something supposedly exciting happening. Sorry if this isn't a very palatable subject - but I know for a fact that I'm going to struggle with this aspect of writing when I finally insert those kind of scenes into my book. I haven't even thought about what I'm going to write for them yet!!!! Mind you, the way I'm going with my writing recently, God knows if I'll ever finish my book!

To answer your question Kaz YES! (Only Joking!!!!) I'm still laughing at that Shirley! ;D As ya's know Antonietta sent me a Jackie Collins book. Theres nothing but sex scenes in the book and its quite graphic but still it didn't embarrass me by a long shot but when I read the scenes that was in this book I cringed cause they come across very immature. If they can't take it to the next level why don't they just leave them out altogether. If a man said to me "Does that seem in working order to you, Ma'am?" I'd say if its not you know were the door is!!!!lol

I agree, Marian Keyes is great at these scenes, and if they're written well they can really add to a book; I hate when they are just thrown is as part of the formula for a book. I have to admit that to date I really enjoy writing love scenes. I even considered writing erotic fiction, until I read one of those books and swiftly changed my mind! I think the best scenes are ones that suggest what is happening rather than going into graphic detail. I read 'A French Affair yesterday by Catherine Daly, and she wrote one very short scene which went something like this: 'They had all their clothes off in ten seconds, and it was over in under a minute." I thought that was pretty good! It worked in the context of the story. I've just rememebered how Jilly Cooper used to do it. I think she used the term 'cruise missile' for his 'manhood' - hilarious! (I love Jilly Cooper's book Riders!)

Kaz, you have to forget about the existence of your mother and everyone you know when you are writing the lurve scenes!! ( my trick is to imagine a reader in Australia who I have never met and never will!)

I have often wondered how they write them. I don't think it's easy myself bu I suppose when you're stuck into the writing of the book you don't have the chance to think too much about it. do I make sense?

finally finished the book don't know how long I've been reading it now but it seems like an age anyway I did enjoy this book and I didnt, it started great quite different to what I normally read and I liked the thought of solving the mystery that surrounded it with the murder however it was just one of those books that went on and on and on and on so much could of been missed out. I've read through your posts and agree with all of them my fav characters were Catherine and Agnes like most of you I prefered the flash backs and reading about those times much better than today. what can I say about Joanna sex mad that girl was and no way, well I wouldnt, jump from one relationship to the other and the amount of time she spent daydreaming in her office its a wonder she got anything done cringe worthy moment for me was when Ronan and Tom came face to face in her office and Joanna was of thinking of threesomes dear god there was no need for that I'm no prude but what use was that!! would be interesting to read Love Hurts but I wouldnt run out to get it and I would have to wait a hell of a long time to pick it up to read it.

I was a while ago going to start a thread about love scences in books and your opnions on them, my opnion is the least description the better I don't read books to hear what goes on between the sheets I don't think we need to, might just be my frame of mind after just reading Love Child. I'm not saying I don't enjoy books with love scences in, just least said is better for me.

THe couple in fiction that I think most about 'doing it' are Jane Eyre and Mr. Rochester. THey are such a passionate couple. The scene where he proposes to her out in the garden, I always have to put down and swoon for a bit! I can only imagine how passionate and adoring he would be in bed! Charlotte Bronte was a genius. She didn't ever describe anything more than a kiss or a pressing together of their bodies - she left the rest to our imagination! I think about those two still!

Sinead Moriarty is very good at dealing with the whole intimacy thing in books. She doesn't describe those scenes too much, but the characters themselves (mostly Emma!) refer to stuff indirectly and it's always in a funny context so it passes off well.
I've just remembered the end of Wish Upon a Star by Tina and there is some bold stuff there - remember when a certain person's mother walked in on 2 particular people just after a romantic encounter??? But there deffo isn't too much of it going on in any of Tina's books.

Some really good points have been made on this thread and I am nearly wetting myself laughing.
Megan - I am taking your advise on board and my Mother is now banished from my thoughts when I am writing.
lol Charlie - Forever by Judy Blume - wasn't that the book where they refered to his manhood as Ralph?
Ha, ha!

Ah Kaz - Ralph lol Its getting worse!!!!! This thread is like a sex education class for me !!!lol
Charlie, When everyone started reading this book I kinda had an idea that not everyone would be over gone on it and that it would put them off reading 'Love Hurts'. I wouldn't blame you not wanting to read anymore but honestly 'Love Hurts' was brilliant. Shirley and Nicc read it around the same time I did and we all enjoyed it. It's very off putting when you read a book thats a bit iffy. There was so much in the book that there was no need for.

To be fair to this book, it really got us all talking. Between the manhood business, Sasha and her fat arxe, Declan and the bull, Gary and his unrealistic declarations of love, Joanna and her threesome fantasies and the mystery itself, there is a lot in there!!!!

I agree the book could have been half of its 530 pages most of which was quite cringemaking.
But I have to defend it a little bit because I did enjoy it and I do want to read Love Hurts because there was a sample chapter of it at the end of Love Child which gave me a little taster.
I know Susan - Ralph of all names - I'm sure that was the book. I mean come on though, who names their bits? Next I'll be calling mine Lulu.
lol this is all so funny!
