Hi Everyone,
I thought I would start this thread as I read a lot of children's books and some of you seem to aswell. I hope that we can discuss them here.
The latest one I read was 'The Bridge to Terabithia' by Katherine Paterson. Some of you may have seen the film? It is a simple story about a boy who makes friends with a girl, who moves into the house nextdoor to his. They spend afternoons in the local woods, making up stories about an imaginary land. I really enjoyed it, and once again, was struck by how children's books can be more true to life than many adult ones.
Next in my list is 'The Golden Compass' by Philip Roth. Has anyone read it?

Hi Megan, I haven't read any of the recent children's books, guess that I would if I had children, so given my age, some of the children's books that I have read would be ancient. I'll have to think of a list of them anyhow.

Andrew took his daughters to see The Golden Compass when it was at the movies. They really enjoyed it. I haven't read the book though.

I don't have children either, Fran, but I love children's books. If anyone has any recommendations, please let me know. My favourite ones are for between ten to fourteen year olds. Thanks.

I have the bug for reading childrens books megan, love Jacqueline Wilson she is brilliant I have a few on standby ready to read , I got one out of the library called Midsummer Meltdown by Cathy Hopkins its for girls 13+ so looking forward to read that I'll let you know what its like. Have you noticed Jacqueline Wilson writes for older girls? some of her latest books are for older readers. I didnt know The Bridge To Terabithia was a book aswell I'll look out for that.
I like a good mix now when I read at one time I would just read one type of book normally contempary fiction I still like that kind of book but I can't read one after another same goes with childrens books or heavier stuff so I like a good mix and the childrens books fit in perfect.

they def are...and some bookshops keep mixing up Meg cabots books...she writes adult ones as well and each time i go into a store they are mixed in with the kids ones...id hate to think of a person buying one of them for a child...could you imagine the mums face if the daughter starts asking strange questions??? the covers on them are the same type as the kids ones so its very easy to mix them up...and they are sooooo not for kids....

There is a book that just caught my eye called The Book Thief by Markus Zusak. It is about a girl in WWII Germany that steals to stay a live and finds she can't stop reading. It sounds really good

I tried to read that one, Claire (THe Book Thief) but I didn't like the way it was narrated, and I had to stop.
I really want to read 'The Princess Diaries' by Meg Cabot. Marian Keyes says, on her website, that these books should be prescribed instead of Prosac! She has them as her number one favourite books!

My nieces enjoy reading the Tracy Beaker books by Jacqueline Wilson - I got them a box set for Christmas.
I'm not really into reading children's books myself but I do keep meaning to buy The Naughtiest Girl in the School books by Enid Blyton, that was my absolute favourite when I was a child.
Maybe I should try a few - I might be pleasantly surprised. I've already started buying books for Alfie and I signed up to this club called Books For Children. I have got the complete set of Beatrix Potter books on order for the introductory price of £9.99 + P&P, I can't wait for them to arrive. (I loved these books also).

I've suddenly remembered Judy Blume. Does anyone remember her? I used to enjoy her books. There was one in particular but I've forgotten the name of it now. It was about two young people who were experimenting sex for the first time and they used to refer to the boy's thingy as Ralph. Me and my friends used to skip to the naughty parts and have a good giggle at break time.
Also I loved Anne Fine. Crummy Mummy and Me was her best.

Yes, I read the Nancy Drew books, but can't remember the details of the now. Kaz, you seem to be on a roll with recommendations- it's great. My next book to read it 'THE BROKEN BRIDGE' by Philip Pullman. I've heard great things about his writing, but this will be his first book for me.

I cried at Vicky Angel (how sad am I?) But, forgive me if I've told you this before but when I'm teaching 6th class kids, I recommend to all the boys to borrow and read a Princess Diaries book if they want to understand about girls. They look a bit bemused but I stand by my advice. My son did (and look where it got him!)

I havent read it yet its next on my list, its a childrens book and has some brilliant revews afew of the first page ; It already feels like a classic, in the sense that you can't imagine a world without it- New Statesman
It really stuck with me. I dreamt about it afterwards- Sunday Express
the blurb of play.com It would be much easier to tell this story if it were all about a chaste and perfect love between Two Children Against the World at an Extreme Time in History. But let's face it, that would be crap. Daisy is sent from New York to England to spend a summer with cousins she has never met. They are Isaac, Edmond, Osbert and Piper. And two dogs and a goat. She's never met anyone quite like them before - and, as a dreamy English summer progresses, Daisy finds herself caught in a timeless bubble. It seems like the perfect summer. But their lives are about to explode. Falling in love is just the start of it. War breaks out - a war none of them understands, or really cares about, until it lands on their doorstep. The family is separated. The perfect summer is blown apart. Daisy's life is changed forever - and the world is too.
