Feels Like Maybe by Claire Allan
« Thread Started on Apr 23, 2008, 8:21pm »

Aoife is 32 and in an on/off relationship with sexy singer Jake. When she finds out she is pregnant, he decides the relationship is most definitely off and leaves her before the pee has time to dry on the stick. Desperate to get him back- and convinced she can- Aoife doesn't tell her parents back home in Derry about her impending arrival until her episiotomy stitches are healing. She then has to return home to face the music - baby in tow and sanity absent without leave.
Meanwhile her best friend has been keeping a secret of her own. Beth and her husband Dan have been trying to get pregnant for the past two years. According to the doctors there is no medical reason fortheir failure to conceive. And if there is no reason, there can't be a problem can there?
Add a gorgeous gardener, an overbearing mother, a perfectly annoying sister-in-law and a well meaning aunt, - all with secrets of their own - into the mix and you have 'Feels Like Maybe'.

And now available for pre-order, with a proposed release date of August 25.

Sounds great, Claire! I like the new title, although I thought Blue Line Blues was very catchy as well - and clever! So exciting that you're almost on your second release now!

Thanks Claire. The same name cropped in another book I read recently and I wasn't sure how to pronounce it so thought this would be a good opportunity to ask.

I was told at a writing course recently that you shouldn't use names that audiences outside Ireland might not be able to pronounce, and if the person reading your submission can't pronounce it, it could well reduce your chances of publication! Weird isn't it? But then I noticed that in Sheila O'Flangan's latest book the name Niamh was spelt as Nieve which I've never seen before so there must be something to it!

The only Nieve I've heard of is the actress Nieve Cambell. She was the main actress in the 'Scream' films!

Her mother is Dutch so that is where the spelling could come from

Interesting but the flip side is that people looking for that "irishness" in a book will like the local names.

That said, being a thicko from the North, I spend many years as a teenager reading Dun Laoghaire as Done Lock Hair until a friend pointed it out to me! :o ;D

In this book as Aoife lives in London, there are lots of mispronunciation jokes and fairly straight away the reader is told how to pronounce it properly!

I like it when books that are either set in Ireland or that has Irish characters have Irish names for those characters as it makes it more real. And I love it even better when the author expalins how to pronounce the names I can't so yay for the above! Although I know I can always ask on here!

It's not just for Irish names. I mispronounced Hermione all the way through the first Harry Potter!

I got it today too Shirley and can't wait to get stuck in!! I'm laughing as I read your comments about the pronunciation of Aoife as Claire put a poll on her Bebo page whilst she was writing the book asking what she should call her character - one option was Aoife (obviously), there were two others and then there was Fionnuala and someone left her a comment saying that there wasn't a hope in hell of anyone ever being able to pronounce it so to forget about it!! Welcome to my world please!!!

Pick away Oonagh - I get what you mean about Tom and Maggie. The things we think of in hindsight!
Book three will be out late next year or early 2010 - mostly because I'll be busy having a baby! But it is written and I'm patiently (and nervously) awaiting feedback from Poolbeg on it.

Claire, Feels Like Maybe was a great read. One thing I look for in a book is readability/page-turning-ability (makie-uppie words, I know), and this book practically read itself for me. That's exactly what would make me have no hesitation in buying your next book, and the one after that. It's so important, and not all books have it!
(And I loved little Maggie - even though she did nothing but feed and cry, as babies do, I still wanted to run away with her - and you got the love that a parent has for a newborn across so well!)
